Robo-Kaito will henceforth be known as Akito. To clear confusion and stop using the term 'robo-Kaito'. This is a serious AU, thanks.
------------------------
Unable to escape in time, Kaito Kuroba died the night the robot stole the rest of his memories. Akito took over his life, filling in the void where he had been with only a few minor bumps in the road. With his mom out of the country, and his friends none the wiser, Kaito's death went unnoticed. The body found at the site of the explosion remained unidentified.
Akito seemed to fit in flawlessly. He was a little more blunt, a little more rude, but his tricks were getting better every day and he still smiled with everything he had. It was when the sun fell for the night that the problems really began. Akito hungers for treasure with a single minded focus. If he sees it, he wants it. If you have it, he wants it. If it's not his, it will be.
Kid's heists became dangerous. Without Kaito's care for human life, and not understanding what it was death really meant, Akito's plans were to get the object of his heist and then escape no matter what. Heists are not death traps, but casualties have happened. The police suddenly have a serious reason to catch this thief, rather than play around, but several officers have been made to retire for medical reasons just by getting caught in the crossfire. Unlike his predecessor, this Kid has little problems hurting the people that get in the way, and once he's made off with his target it is never returned.
Challengers to his name are met with severe fates. The department store manager who thought they could pretend to be him is still comatose and likely will never walk again.
Koizumi Akako is the first to suspect that something is seriously wrong with him. Her mirror tells her that all men are her slaves. It has never been wrong before, but Kuroba and Kid (who are clearly one and the same) are entirely immune to her effect. It doesn't take her long to realize he isn't human. From the time this revelation and challenge is made, Akito and Akako are at war. He hates her with a deep passion. She very much wants him dead. But as of yet all of their attempts to take the other out have failed.
The night of the Blue Birthday heist, Kid faces down Snake, more than ready for him. The phone call warning him away from gems had been taken as a threat and a challenge. He follows them to their hideout, learns about Pandora, and tells them flat out that they will never get to see it. It will be his and only his. The next time he sees Snake is the last night Snake lives. Nakamori can't prove that Kid is the one who killed their John Doe found by the heist location but the evidence can't tell them he didn't.
Kid drives Hakuba nuts. He has a personal reason now to catch him. Kid is a danger to the police trying to stop him, but according to Hakuba's evidence though Kid was always a criminal he never used to be like this. Even the first several heists after his revival followed the original pattern. Hakuba knows something happened to change Kid and he desperately wants to know what it was. He nearly gets hurt on several heists trying to get solid evidence, but he's not willing to give up.
Aoko...knew something had happened. Kaito had been a little weird at first, but when she confronted him about it the weirdness stopped. And funny enough? So did the rudeness. While they still bickered, he stopped picking on her. Started being nicer. Would do things for her, and give her gifts. It was a nice change from before and for a long time she was okay with that. Until she realized that some of the things he had given her were not cheap.
In search for answers, Aoko becomes suspicious that Kaito is Kid, and goes to confront him on the night of a heist. She finds him covered in blood, seemingly in shock, next to the body of a man who had one hand on a gun. A desperate "Aoko, help me. They killed my dad." later, and she was helping him hide it, covering up the crime. He tells her everything, to a point. About the men after him, what they're searching for.
How she has to promise not to tell ANYONE. She's an accomplice now, after all. It'd break her father's heart. Plus if Nakamori tries to go after these bad guys he could be targeted too, and no one wants that. It's everything she can do to keep herself together and function as normal in public.
Conan is currently uninvolved until the one and only Jirokichi heist which ends in two coincidental murders, the murderer dead, and twelve injured.
